Windows 8.1 installing issues

Why Can’t I Install Windows 8.1? (Solution)

As I expected, I’m having some issues installing the Windows 8.1 update this morning. If you’re experiencing issues, do the following:

First, if you’re on the Windows 8.1 preview, you won’t be able to install the update directly. You’ll actually need to restore Windows 8. You should either have a memory stick with your recovery, or a recovery partition on your hard drive (if you didn’t move the recovery onto a memory stick, it’s on your hard drive). Go to the Settings Charm > Change PC Settings > Scroll to the bottom and tap “Update and Recovery”, then Recovery and choose “Remove everything and reinstall Windows”.

This will take some time, but it’s a necessary step.

Once you’ve completed this, like me, you’ll probably want to head straight to the Windows Store to update your PC. Hold on there bucko! You’re now running a year old version of Windows 8. There is almost a Gigabyte of updates waiting for you that you absolutely must install first.

Go ahead and go to the Settings Charm again, then “Change PC Settings” scroll to the bottom and choose “Windows Update”. Install those updates. This can take some time depending on your connection. I noticed that the progress bar did not move, however, the updates are installing even though the progress bar isn’t showing any progress. Just tap install and walk away for 30 minutes or so. Once everything has downloaded, your PC will need to install the updates. This will take about 15-20 minutes (there are a full 60 updates) depending on how fast your device is.

Ok, now you’re up to date and should be on par with every one else that didn’t install the Windows 8.1 preview. Skip to the bottom and tap the “Install Windows 8.1″ link.

For those of you updating devices that aren’t running the preview, make sure that all of your Windows updates are installed by heading to the Settings Charm, Change PC Settings, Scroll to the bottom and tap Update and Recovery, and look for any updates there. Once you’ve updated, you should be good.

At this point, everyone should be able to download the update right from the Windows Store. Go ahead and click this link to download it. You should be taken right to the store after clicking here: Install Windows 8.1

I get the download to about 50% then it stops, I can’t remember what the error message was, do you have any ideas?

I am on the 8.1 Preview for RT. I am on the latest firmware. I can’t even get the store app to open, when I do I only see the new Facebook app and an NFL app and three blank tiles. Any word on your guys’ surface RT update process?

I am also having great difficulty updating my Surface RT. The Store wouldn’t load at all yesterday. I “Refreshed” and flashed my Windows RT 8.1 Preview, installed updates… all to no avail. I’ll let you know what happens.

go to your internet options, then the connection bar, then click on Lan settings and turn proxy server off, it fixes it fully, the only problem is, you have to turn it off every now and then and its brutally annoying, hopefully 8.1 fixes that.

This may help toward solving your troubles, it did me.

I had the same issues as Kasey. It was a long time ago but I believe I installed my Preview using an ISO. When I ‘Reinstall Everything’ the licencing displays that it is Windows 8.1 RT Preview.
I’ve attempted other things that were suggested on other forums lastly kept the default Language to be English US (I’m in Australia).

Install all the updates (20), restart. (And for good measure do another restart-it probably doesn’t need it but it helped me get into Store).
Go to IE on the Desktop. in the address bar at the top enter
ms-Windows-Store:WindowsUpgrade and I was able to get to the Windows RT 8.1 update. Click install. You may not see anything happening but go install something else as well and get out of Store and go back in and you should see Installing 2 apps… in the top right corner.
I’m half way through the update so I hope this helps others..
